Micro cutter for complex aluminum micro components
AluLine – Micro: with DLC coating and minimal tolerances
Machining smaller components is no easy task: from the medical technology sector to the latest generation of smartphones and elegant watch cases, machining complex small parts is a growing industry. This means that the tools used to manufacture these components need to be very small as well. We have completely redesigned our AluLine – Micro milling cutters to adapt to modern industry requirements. They now have a smaller 4-millimeter shank, with cutting edge diameters reduced from 0.2 to 3.0 mm or 3xD to 12xD and an extremely thin DLC coating.
Large portfolio of micro tools for machining aluminum
We offer a wide range of tool options for AluLine – Micro:
This product range provides small part manufacturers with process security when working with materials such as aluminum alloys, copper, and other non-ferrous metals.
1. Corner chamfer
2. Torus
3. Full radius
Advantages/benefits of the micro cutter from the AluLine series
Small-scale aluminum machining
Scaling down a tool concept to a micro version is more than just downsizing from large diameter tools. Producing milling cutters with diameters from 0.2 mm relies on a vast amount of expertise, as well as an adapted substrate which provides the necessary tool stability. We use an ultra-fine grain substrate for this purpose, which is recommended for use in abrasive aluminum alloys.
The smaller the component, the more critical the tolerances. The new AluLine – Micro cutters with 3 µm at a diameter of 0.2 mm provide customers with a buffer when working in the high-precision range. The 4 mm tool shank, which is now suitable for shrink-fit applications, also contributes to this, thus ensuring optimum concentricity and ultimately the highest contour quality on the component.
Sharp cutting edges with ultra-thin DLC coating
For many, adhesive chips and built-up edges are an inevitable part of machining aluminum. What causes an issue at the macro level is sure to present even more of a problem during micro cutting. Which is why the AluLine – Micro cutters are given a special polish grinding for more homogeneous cutting edges and improved chip flow. Our micro cutters also feature an ultra-smooth DLC coating. Together with the special geometry of the tools, the sticky aluminum chips are now easily removed from the cutting zone.
The advantage of DLC layers is that they can be super-thin so they do not have a negative effect on the sophisticated geometries and sharp cutting edges. They are also extremely smooth, which means the aluminum chips are quickly removed. And not to be underestimated: They give the AluLine micro milling cutters a considerable increase in performance and tool life - essential for stable and economical processes.
